Motivating Mom of the Month-March 2025: Betsy Houska

"Quiet but fierce, Betsy shows up and gives her all—every single class. With Benjie by her side and her stroller as her base, she embodies what true self-care as a mom looks like. Her strength speaks volumes without ever saying a word" -Shannon Slayer, Fit4Mom Franchise Owner

"Betsy consistently shows up to classes ready to go with a smile on her face! She's friendly and welcoming to the other moms and always stays after class to chat and play with the other kids. We are lucky to have her and Benjie as part of our village." -Jade Bocek, Fit4Mom Instructor

Who are the members of your family and where are you originally from?

I’m originally from upstate NY and now live in VA with my husband and our son Benjie and our cat whom Benjie calls “nunnuh”.

When was your first Fit4Mom class and what do you remember about it?

My first class was in August. I remember enjoying having other moms with whom to connect, and a friendly environment for my baby to join. It was nice to have other moms to walk and talk with in the fresh air.

Where can we find you? What is your Fit4Mom routine these days?

I often go to Stroller Strides in Burke with Jade. Benjie loves his friends there, the smile song, and running, running, running all around afterward! He calls Fit4mom “my-noh” for “smile”.

What is your current job? Or what did you do before staying at home (if you don’t currently work outside the home)?

Currently a SAHM, but previously worked as an elementary school psychologist.

What are 3 of your favorite things?

Running/walking, visits with family, and reading

You are given 4 hours of FREE babysitting. What would you do?

Go hiking or yoga class or to a museum

What has being a mom taught you?

So much! Mostly how to slow down and see things for the first time through a child’s eyes.

What is your funniest or most embarrassing mommy moment so far?

At the museum of natural history, I got to watch Benjie point to all the cave peoples’ belly buttons and give them all hugs and kisses (including kisses for the prehistoric rodents).

Any words of wisdom for other moms?

Treat yourself with grace and kindness, and trust your instincts and that you know your child best.

What is your favorite thing about FIT4MOM? What would you tell someone thinking about joining?

The structure and community it has provided for Benjie and me has been a gift. We have made some amazing friends and I would encourage other new moms to join to find a network of moms and babies going through similar experiences.
